This study investigated post-secondary Gozitan students' knowledge and awareness of risk-elimination, risk-reduction and harm-minimisation measures to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), together with the prevalence of misconceptions and myths related to STIs. Within this context, young people's preferred and actual sources of knowledge about STIs were thoroughly looked into, with consideration being given to gender differences and the students' academic background. A questionnaire survey tool, purposely constructed for this study, was administered among a non-probability convenience sample of 170 students (response rate 85%) aged 16 to 18 at the canteen of a post-secondary school on the island of Gozo. Quantitative data were inputted and analysed manually using Microsoft Excel, and presented in the form of tables and graphs. Results obtained from this study showed a fair level of knowledge and awareness of STIs, the existence of misconceptions about sexual infections, students' choice of school as an actual and preferred source of knowledge and the important role of healthcare professionals as a source of information on STis. No significant gender differences were noted even if students having a background in biology as an area of study demonstrated better knowledge of STis than colleagues who studied non- science subjects. Findings also showed the need for sexuality education programmes that become ingrained within the curriculum, the greater involvement of healthcare professionals within schools and the involvement of youths themselves in health strategies aimed at their welfare. These measures would necessitate the re-bargaining of both educational and health policies targeting youths. Results of this research helped to point out areas where Gozitan youths' knowledge and awareness on STIs is lacking. Research utilising a larger sample and including other post -secondary schools in Gozo could add to current knowledge in the area, thereby aiding educators and leaders to target better practices in the management of STis.en_GB
