Insulin treatment is central to diabetes mellitus. Improper administration of insulin could result in hypoglycemic or hyperglycemic complications. The administration of insulin involves the preparation of insulin within a syringe and its injection within the subcutaneous layer. The main aim of this study was to examine the techniques used by adults suffering from diabetes mellitus for insulin self-administration and to compare these practices with research based recommendations. A sample of 10 participants was chosen from the diabetic outpatient department of the local general hospital. Non-participant observations and brief interviews were used in order to address the aims and objectives of the study. Data collection was carried out at the participants' homes. Results indicate that all participants aspirated the prescribed dose of insulin. However, participants performed various mistakes and omissions with respect to the proper technique for the administration of insulin. Such practice could lead to fluctuations in blood glucose levels. It is recommendable to develop and follow a policy to ensure that all individuals who are prescribed insulin are given the adequate education and learning practice with respect to the proper technique for the administration of insulin.en_GB
