Abstract: | This study investigated the nurses' knowledge regarding elderly depression, the management of depression and the training received by nurses working in long term residential settings. A purposive sample of nurses (n=70) both male and female who work in a long term residential setting in the chosen wards were invited to participate. Data was collected through a questionnaire that was partly formulated by the researcher and partly obtained by a validated tool developed by Keranztas, Davison, McCabe, Mellor, and Beaton (2012). A response rate of 85.7% was obtained. Data analysis contained both qualitative and quantitative results. Qualitative data was analysed through content analysis, while quantitative was analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that the nurses need more training regarding elderly depression and there are certain myths surrounding elderly depression that need a lot more training and education to overcome them. Nurses also identified the need for more knowledge about the management of depression. There was no significant difference in the level of knowledge between gender, age, level of training and years of experience. In conclusion, more training in depression is recommended for staff working with elderly in a long term residential setting, in order to improve detection rates, and management of elderly depression. A number of recommendations were also identified. Obligatory training regarding elderly depression was recommended. Moreover, a larger study similar to this can be conducted to help in understanding more the knowledge and training that nurses require in this area of practice. |
