Translocation is a potentially stressful event among the older adults' life and can be perceived as either a positive or negative event (Lee, 1999; Wilson., 1997) influencing on the well being of the older person. The main aim of the study was to investigate older adults' experiences and feelings of living in a residential home. A descriptive non-experimental design was adapted and data was collected by means of a structured interview schedule using mainly open-ended questions. The sample comprised 10 older adults (N=10) from a single public-private residential home chosen by the researcher. From this study it was found that these older adults experienced both positive and negative feelings on being admitted in a residential home. But, the majority of the older adults held a positive view of their first day but others think of it as a very sad day. This appeared to be influenced by the level of preparation the older adults received prior admission. In general the participants claimed that their mentioned needs were being satisfied in the home. Participants recognized the fact that they spent time with the staff and other residents however they did not feel comfortable to share their problems with them. Older adults appreciated the visits they received both from family and friends. Participants showed their appreciation towards certain material objects in the home such as food, chapel, hygiene but they disliked the lack of privacy and some indicated the need for a single room. These results were discussed and pertinent recommendations were done.en_GB
