Abstract: This research explores the current situation of the teaching and learning of geography in Gozitan primary state schools. Through questionnaires distributed to all Year 6 teachers in Gozitan state schools, direct interviews with sixty Year 6 students and with all Form 1 geography teachers, various aspects in geography teaching and learning are analysed in this study. This is achieved in terms of methodology, resources, fieldwork, cross-curricular integration, assessment, environmental awareness and teachers' and pupils' attitudes towards the subject. The new geography syllabus is also analysed. The study revealed that in the teaching and learning of geography in Gozo, different methodologies are being adopted in an effective manner and that fieldwork is being implemented. There are also areas which need to be improved, such as integration of geography with subjects across the curriculum and the use of more resources to support the pupils' learning. In addition the general aim of geography teaching and learning should not merely be that of covering the whole syllabus. The main objective should be that of developing the pupils' knowledge, understanding, skills, competencies, attitudes and values; each one of these is highly important. It was noted that the new geography syllabus (Curriculum Management Department, 2005) and the National Minimum Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 1999) are powerful tools in rendering the teaching and learning of geography more effective, by being used as guidelines to improve the weak points and enhance the good practices.
