Getting into a technological world : communicating technology situations on video clips

Abstract

This study will propose the use of visual media as an aid to teaching Design and Technology. The research carried out will consist of twelve pupils, six males and six females, between the age of eleven and thirteen years. The subject of Design and Technology will be novel to the selected participation in this study. The research will start by the analysis of some of the currently available educational media and their applicability to the Design and Technology curriculum. The researcher will be involved in the investigation of the selected technical topic, planning lesson plans, setting up the right environment and props, preparing the children to take up their role and shooting the video. Assessment of the product will initially be conducted by analysing the demand for video support during Design and Technology lesson plans. Success of the communication of technology will be measured by interviews, and other tests to confirm the understanding of the technological principles conveyed. The video is expected to provide students with the abilities to acquire cognitive and creative knowledge skills together with skills and attitudes, which are mentioned in the Maltese National Minimum Curriculum. The main purpose of learning Design and Technology is to learn to cope with everyday situations, which pupils might encounter in life and at their place of work.
