dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to identify the experiences of mature students pursuing an undergraduate, full-time degree. We have particularly looked at the motivations which lead non-traditional age students to resume their studies, their expectations of university and the course of their choice and how they balance their studies with other responsibilities. We have also explored the relationships that adult students share with family, peers and lecturers. Further focus is given to mature students' participation and integration together with academic and personal achievement. The research project entailed the use of a qualitative approach, through the biographical interviewing of eighteen subjects (11 females and 7 males), who varied considerably in terms of age, course, year group, status, responsibilities and family situation. The findings show that integration and academic performance develop on the students' own initiative, determination and input together with the influence and support of family, peers, lecturers and significant others. Various coping strategies were sought by our participants in order to juggle multiple roles. Moreover, this study has established that the majority of mature students fare well in their studies due to the fact that they take their work seriously and approach learning with great determination and enthusiasm. | en_GB |
