Abstract: | The Ministry of Education has been implementing an impressive inclusive education programme since mid-nineties. This is being done to ensme equitable access to the national minimmn curriculum. Due to these inclusive programmes, educators are very likely to encounter teaching an atypical child, such as Down syndrome learners. The aim of this study was to generate an interest, in gaining knowledge regarding the best ways in teaching Art to children with Down syndrome aged eight to twelve and whether it is true that students with Down syndrome can also engage profitably in art activities. Through review of the literatme, six observation sessions at Ir-Razzett talHbiberija and by conducting very general interviews among facilitators, art specialists and special needs educators, the researcher gathered enough data to help with devising and testing ten practical suggestions in the form of lesson plans. The major findings which emerged from the results of this study were that student behaviour and learning styles of a child with Down syndrome tend to differ from what is usually expected. Due to this the educator has to be flexible make several adaptations namely; instructional adaptations; classroom layout adaptations; resource adaptations; concepts and aims adaptations. Other interesting findings that became apparent were that students with Down syndrome benefit a lot from undergoing artistic activities, as art has the power to boost up self-esteem, provide pleasure and success together with opportunities to self-expression and communication. Considering this beneficial influence that Art was having on students with Down syndrome aged eight to twelve, the researcher argued that some form of special training, in teaching mentally delayed learners, implemented in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) course, would be very advantageous to all student teachers. |
