Abstract: This dissertation investigates the levels of English literacy achieved by Maltese fifth formers for listening, speaking and reading skills. The variables under investigation as being thought to influence literacy achievement are school type, gender, social class and attitudes towards literacy. This study confirms the existence of a positive correlation between levels of literacy and each of the variables identifier above.
