Abstract: This study examines in detail the performance of year six pupils in the 1995 Maltese final examination in relation with to Maltese Junior Lyceum examination of the same year. The main emphasis of this work is to study the performance of the pupils in every grammatical item of both examination papers. The content of this dissertation covers an investigation into the orthographical, lexical and grammatical errors in each grammatical exercise of these two papers. Moreover, a detailed investigation of the reading paper of the Maltese final examination is also studied. Another aspect of this study is to investigate sex and age differences. A sample consisting of 731 scripts from four Maltese and one Gozitan primary state schools is studied in this dissertation. It is divided as follows: (i) 357 scripts of 166 boys and 191 girls who sat for year six final examination in Maltese, and (ii) 374 Maltese Junior Lyceum examination scripts of 178 boys and 196 girls. Age and sex differences are studied as follows: Pupils are divided into eight categories - four categories for boys and four for girls. Then, the four categories of each sex are again divided into: (a) those pupils who were born during the year 1983, (b) those born in the first four months of 1984, (c) those born in the second four months of 1984 and (d) those born in the last four months of 1984. We studied the performance of each category (age-group) m each grammatical 'item' of the two examination papers and compared the number of errors committed by different categories.
