Abstract: The grammar-translation method of language teaching was widely used until 1920's and it met with differing degrees of success and failure. This was replaced in the 1930's by the direct method, which advocated by hearing the language spoken. Through the 1930's, the strict control of vocabulary and grammatical structures sought to systemise language teaching.
