Abstract: The first part of this thesis examines which examinations are available at a National Level to assess the musical abilities of students. The results of research carried out among private lesson and band club lesson students, teachers and parents will also be developed and scrutinized. Chapter 3, then examines the implications of music examinations vis-a-vis the relationship between teachers and parents. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss, with the help of excerpts from interviews and books, the positive and negative aspects of music examinations as well as their validity. Finally, Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation by taking a look at the viability of what was proposed in interviews and exposes author's suggestions regarding a national scale plan to improve music education and assessment in general.
