Universities of the Third Age have evolved in different countries following different traditions. We shall start by looking at the English and French models, as these seem most relevant to our study. Turning to the local U3A (U3E), we shall research its origin, how it functions and in which way it has adapted to foreign U3As. These issues shall be raised during interviews with Mr. Anthony Schembri, first chairperson of the U3E and Mr. Paul Muscat Terribile, present chairperson of the U3E. The interviews shall be followed by an in-depth questionnaire investigating whether the U3E is appealing to the majority of the elderly persons. The object of these questions is to raise the following questions: Is the name 'U3E' acting as a deterrent to those elderly people who think that they are not 'qualified enough' to attend this 'university'? What attracts or discourages attendance? Is it true that U3E members come :from the same social and professional background? If so, can we say that it is socially exclusive? This information shall be gathered by means of 400 questionnaires, half of which shall be filled by randomly selected U3E members, while the remaining half shall be completed by non-U3E senior citizens from 12 local districts. Our dissertation shall conclude with a critique, reflecting on the conclusions drawn :from our research.en_GB
