Abstract: The study looks at the reading texts in use at present, at year 5 level of Maltese State and Private schools. The term 'reading texts' specifically refers to those books used for the instruction of reading. The State schools make use of the Ladybird Read with me series and Private schools make use of the series Ginn New Reading 360 and Wide Range Readers, Green Book 4. The contents of these texts are evaluated for quality, quantity and relevance. The contents are also matched against the stated aims of the syllabus and curriculum. The reading level of the children is matched with the reading grade of the books in order to identify whether children are reading at the right level. The objective of the study is to compare and contrast these graded Readers. This study reveals that there are differences between what is being offered to the students in State schools and that which is offered to students in Private schools. Throughout the dissertation, the term 'Readers' refers specifically to the books, while 'readers' refers to the users of these Readers. Private schools in the study include both Church and Independent schools.
