Il-moviment qawmien letterarju : it-twaqqif u s-snin tal-bidu

Abstract

This dissertation attempts to trace out cultural and literary causes that brought about the need for the set-up of the Movement for the Promotion of Literature (Moviment Qawmien Letterarju). The Maltese literary scene in the fifties and sixties is tackled in the light of the local historical ambient, while the set-up is studied both on its own merits and in the context of cultural influences from abroad in the late sixties. The analysis of the controversy that marked the early years catalyses an understanding of the main new ideological trends and how these were implemented in literary creative writing. This work brings about the conclusion that the set-up period and the early years of the Movement for the Promotion of Literature make up a whole literary experience.
