Abstract

This study aims to analyse the syntactic structure in texts of a restricted sample of Maltese books, intended for five year olds. In my sample, three books start with simpler sentences and move progressively to more complex ones, whereas the other two stick to simpler types. This study pin points a number of sentence types used throughout the books and their relative frequency is also quantified. Besides it also highlights syntactic structures thought to be appropriate for presentation to children in the specified age group. Moreover, ideally it should be complemented by an attempt to discover syntactic structures, actually produced by five year olds.
