Abstract: The first chapter of this work provides the background by tracing the history of language teaching methods from the times of the "natural method" to those of the present day. This leads us to view the contrast and similarity between the audio-visual methods known as of the "first generation" and those of the "second generation". We then move on to study the influence that the field of modern Linguistics had upon these two methods. Chapter 3 will analyse, at a deeper level, the two methods at practice. In the final chapter some pedagogical aspects of the two methods are examined in the light of results from questionnaires distributed among students.
