Abstract: This dissertation is a qualitative study focusing on the various reasons why parents choose to send their children to a private school or a church school. The main objective of the study is to discover the reasons why these parents preferred a fee paying-system or a 'lots' system accordingly and have in fact refused a free state education .. The study attempts to reveal the prejudices and biases these parents hold against state schools. It also investigates the differences that exist between the two non-state systems, that is the private schools and the independent schools.
