Abstract: This study looks at the different aspects of suffering - the physical and the moral - as it is seen by three prominent Maltese Romantic poets; Ruzar Briffa, Karmenu Vassallo and Anton Buttigieg. In view of these three particular poets, we see how suffering is represented in Maltese Romantic poems. From the recognition of the personal experience of the chosen poets, the study goes on to identify the universal meaning that is given to suffering being the theme of the poem. The poets chosen are being studied in view of their own personal identity but are given comments in order to put forward what it is that makes them different and/or what is that groups them together. The differences are more often subtle and small. Hence, the poets who belong to the same period have more things in common that unite them than things to put them apart. The three poets, though using different analysis, conclude that life is suffering. Primarily, the unity of suffering with life, is the result of incidents that occurred in the poets' life which diminished their happiness; the happiness that every person should enjoy from birth. In front of this world not so desirable, the poets created the poem in order to create an ideal desirable world.
