Abstract: A number of subjects at Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) level have a coursework component. This study aims to evaluate the changes implemented in the Home Economics coursework component in 2003 and 2005 by looking into how teachers and students have been affected. The Home Economics coursework component is now composed of three tasks, an investigation and two practical assignments. Preliminary interviews with the Home Economics Education Officer and Home Subject Coordinators were carried out to get an overview of the current situation in relation to the SEC coursework component. Two questionnaires were distributed to obtain participants' views on the coursework component: one to a sample of Form 5 students and another to Home Economics teachers teaching Form 4 and 5. Coursework marks between 2001 and 2005 were analysed in order to study how students are fairing in the coursework component. Results show that students and teachers are satisfied with the reduction in the number of tasks. The majority of students like the idea that the practical component is school based, but mixed views were expressed by teachers due to difficulties in assessment and time constraints. Furthermore, coursework marks indicate that the majority of students are getting very high marks in the coursework component. The findings indicate that there is a need for teacher training in coursework assessment and for the development of detailed assessment criteria. This would ensure validity and reliability in assessment. Furthermore, the need was felt that moderation should move away from the inspectorial model to a more interactive model.
