Authors: | Cassar, Gilbert |
Keywords: | Information technology Transformational leadership Organizational change |
Issue Date: | 2015 |
Abstract: | IT has revolutionized many parts of our lives and has led the world to the digital age. However, technology is not the only or even the most important factor in this transformation. Technology must be driven by a herd of knowledgeable, committed and capable individuals who are able to leverage it and create increasingly sophisticated products or services. These individuals must be able to understand both the volatile and fast moving world of technology while also being able to apply this knowledge within their organisations and markets. This is leading to a drastic change in the competencies required and to the emergence of a new type of leadership; e-leadership. This dissertation will qualitatively analyse the change in the role of IT within organisation and the consequent change in the role of e-leaders. It will analyse the foundations of eleadership and try to define it better. Furthermore, it will delve into the development of eleaders and identify the competencies needed for them to perform in their new roles. It will also investigate the shortage of competent e-leaders today and critical issues in their development. This data will be based on insights from interviews with IT leaders at different levels. Finally this research will try to critically analyse and redefine the term e-leadership and propose a simple model to link different components of competency such as traits, attitudes, work attitudes and skills. It will also put forward a number of recommendations on how this situation can be improved both from an individual e-leader or prospective eleader perspective and but also from a wider organisational perspective. |
