Abstract: The aim of this study is mainly to discover some of the conditions that may result in emotional disturbance in children aged between 3 and 12 years. Play, accepted by many authorities as a factor that may help modify behaviour, was also studied. The questionnaires were designed to look at the child within his family and school environment. Observations were carried out at private homes, Institutions, St Luke's Hospital play group and Special Schools, as well as non-special schools. Findings include some improvement in behaviour of disturbed children during play activities. Home background was also found a possibly strong contributing factor to unacceptable behaviour. Some recommendations that may assist in modifying behaviour of the emotionally disturbed child are made.
