This dissertation analyses how a number of year five teachers in primary state schools around Malta and Gozo, conceptualise their teaching of Maltese story reading. Our research is both quantitative and qualitative in nature, involving fifty questionnaires distributed in twenty schools, eighteen observations carried out in twelve schools and individual interviews conducted with eight teachers. Amongst the factors which were investigated, one finds: the methodology employed during this type of lesson; the books and resources used; the lesson's delivery and the teachers' perception with regards reading stories. Thus, we tried to give a genuine profile of the teaching of narrative at this level. From this study we can conclude that story reading is a frequently-done activity, integrated with different subjects. Great emphasis is laid on the theme, the resources used and the activities which follow: all three need to be suitable to the students' needs and abilities. This dissertation ends with a number of suggestions in the light of improving the Maltese story reading lesson.en_GB
