Abstract: This dissertation is intended primarily as a source of information and guidance to those Art teachers in the secondary schools and higher institutions who constantly feel the need to refer to local specimens of :paintings and sculpture in the course of their lessons in the History of Art. The National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta houses a fine collection of such works and will therefore constitute the main source of reference throughout this dissertation. This work is divided into two sections, the first of which consists of a thorough survey of this museum. This survey should provide the teacher concerned with the necessary background knowledge to each section of the museum as well as a number of considerations on the best works displayed. The works range from the 1300 till the sent day and each section in this museum covers a particular period. The second section comprises a number of specimen lesson plans intended to aid teacher in delivering 'on-the-spot' lessons. Each lesson plan will include most of the relevant teaching points concerning two or three selected works and an inductive a:pproach is advocated throughout. This section is followed by a series of illustrations of the works referred to in the text and lesson plans.
