Abstract: The period of the Knights of St. John has been chosen as a background for this dissertation since at such a time the Italian language reigned supreme in Malta, and Italy's influence on this small island was great indeed. The introduction gives a general idea of the culture existing during the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries especially literary achievements. The first chapter deals with drama, starting with a study of the Manoel theatre and the first plays represented; examining the works of three important authors and concluding with reflections on the feast of "Calendimaggio" with its musical representations and the melodramatic theatre. The second chapter deals with the poets who wrote long epics as well as short verses running over different themes. Prose dominates the last chapter writings of travel, medical and scientific reports, historical and archeological findings. It is an honour that such a small island could contribute so much but it is an important concept that Italian culture had a most extensive influence on what were the most rich, culture wise, centuries in this island.
