Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the types of relationships between Maltese poetry and music in Malta. The first chapter draws a general picture of the beginning and development of the relationship between music and poetry on an international scale. The second chapter deals with Maltese "Għana" which is considered to be the starting point of the rapport between Maltese poetry and music. Religious and civil hymns are discussed in chapters three and four respectively, dealing with the sort of mutual understanding between Maltese poets and musicians. The fifth chapter gives a thorough account of the different Maltese poetic works which have been set to classical music. This analysis is set against the social and historical background of Malta, and put within a chronological framework.
