Abstract: This dissertation tries to analyse the way Maltese poetry at advanced level is being taught from a students' point of view. This is done vis-a-vis the literature characteristics needed for the appreciation of poetry. The research was conducted in the four main official sixth form institutions in the Maltese context. This research was carried out using a triangulation technique as a method of investigation, in order to obtain reliable and valid information. Hence, quantitative research, by means of a questionnaire was supported by qualitative research by means of interviews. This provided a more rounded picture of the investigation. It is clear that from the results obtained the teachers are doing their utmost to present their students the literature characteristics needed for the appreciation of poetry. It is also evident that students from the four schools share some common thoughts as regards the meaning and method of poetry appreciation. The majority of the participants also pointed out that the traditional method that is used at the moment is inhibiting them from showing enthusiasm in participating in a free and active manner in class. The results also show that students wish that in class different teaching methods should be applied in order to enhance their motivation, interest and love towards poetry. The study ends up with presenting a discussion on the results obtained together with some suggestions that might help to improve poetry lessons mainly by focusing on what are the students main concerns and wishes as regards the teaching of poetry.
