Abstract: | This dissertation analyzes how Gozitan legends can be considered as a generative theme in teaching Maltese in year four primary classrooms. For a start various books were consulted in order to obtain information regarding legends and past studies carried out on this subject. After a thorough reading of different collections of legends from Gozo, and a critical look at different textbooks officially or unofficially used by State school teachers, it was determined that more attention should be given to this topic. Therefore, a number of lessons with the relevant resources were devised to illustrate the potential of legends as an organisational topic within the language classrooms. A number of these lessons were later implemented in four year four classes in the primary state sector in Malta. During the delivery, an evaluation scheme was given to every teacher who observed the lessons. The students who participated in the project were given a questionnaire to obtain their feedback. A personal research diary was also kept in order to record data gathered during this experience. Whilst this was a small scale evaluation, the positive results demonstrate the suitability of such and endeavour and should serve as a spring board for similar initiatives. |
