Aspetti psikoloġiċi u soċjali fir-realiżmu ta' Nirien ta' mħabba ta' Ġużè Chetcuti

Abstract

This dissertation discusses the European movement of realism and naturalism and their impact on Nirien ta Mhabba by Guze' Chetcuti. The tripartite structure of the novel is also discussed so that it comes to light that the first five chapters are written in the first person by five different characters from one and the same family, while the sixth and the seventh chapters are written in the third person by the novelist himself. The psychological aspect is also commented upon, including discussions on extroversion vs introversion and emotional stability vs emotional instability. The social aspect is also treated with special emphasis on the poverty existing in Malta between the two Great Wars. Folklore is also highlighted, and helps to create a Maltese environment throughout the novel.
