Abstract: | This dissertation analyses the play Vaganzi tas-Sajf by Francis Ebejer. The content of each Act is discussed at a certain length by way of introduction. The structure of the play is then elaborated upon; special attention is given to time, place and action. The part played by dreams and imagination is also exposed. Allegory has an important share in the play. In a special way, the use of symbols in allegory, the allegory of the voyage and the allegory of myth and the ritual are commented upon with reference to the play itself. All in all, one can say that Ebejer wrote this play as a mental exercise for himself and for his audience and readership. He introduced two levels of meaning, one literal and one allegorical; the literal being rather simple, but the allegorical more complex and advanced due to psychological causes, allegory, mythology and ritual of old religions. |
