Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of audiovisual resources on English language achievement. Observation was chosen as the main tool for gathering data. Two English teachers were observed once a week for a period of one scholastic year. The researchers recorded the use of audiovisuals, questioning techniques, as well as code-switching during the lessons observed. Part of the dissertation deals with the development of EL T around the world, and then focuses more specifically on the history of EL T in Malta. A variety of methods and approaches are dealt with in detail, taking in consideration methods which are no longer popular such as the Grammar Translation method, and also ones which are currently endorsed such as Communicative Language Teaching. There is also a focus on the use of instructional media in language teaching, with particular reference to audiovisual resources. The research findings suggest that audiovisual resources play a significant role in English language achievement. Nevertheless any improvements made by students cannot be solely attributed to the use of audiovisual resources.
