Abstract: In this dissertation one can look at this particular sport on the local scene. It contains a brief historical background, and looks at the present situation, both at National level and at School Level. Lastly, some suggestions are proposed for upgrading the athletics in Malta. Athletics is a physical activity comprising natural actions like running, jumping and throwing. In one way or another, athletics events have been performed by man since the origin of the species. Because of its tradition, its universality and prestige, as well as the wide range of skills and qualities that it encompasses, it is the basic sport "par excellence". As part of the research conducted, were some interviews to various people involved in Athletics, namely, in alphabetical order; Mr Joe Bajada (President of the M.A.A.A.A.), Mr Louis Borg (Physical Education lecturer at the Malta University), Mr Ray Cassar Torreggianni (Coach and Official), Mr Lewis Portelli (journalist), and Mr Godwin Zammit (Hon. Secretary of the M.A.A.A.).
