Abstract: The first part discusses the theoretical background of child-care and the historical developments of the different approaches to child-care, both abroad and in Malta, leading of the to the contemporary outlook. A discussion psychological, emotional and consequently educational implications of residential care on the child precedes a survey of present-day child-care in Malta, presenting the reports of visits carried out to the major Children's Homes on the island. A study on the accademic attainment of children in care in Maltese schools brings the work to a conclusion showing that the accademic attainment of children in care in Malta is below that of children from normal households. The conclusion corresponds with what other researchers have found on the attainment of in-care children abroad.
