Abstract: This dissertation examines how human geography can be viewed from the perspective of gender by taking emigration as a case study. The focus is on the distribution between male and female emigrants of the Maltese Islands between the years 1960 and 1969. Initially, the position of women in society is examined through the social restrictions imposed on female migration. The reasons for a person's decision to emigrate are discussed leading to the main cause of the Maltese emigration process during the sixties. The pattern of emigration is presented through annual published data. The study also includes the possible variations in emigration from the different regions of Malta and Gozo as well as in various localities. Finally, the results of the research are statistically analysed in an attempt to render a more accurate and objective assessment of the emigration process in particular areas of the Maltese Islands.
