Abstract: This work forms part of a project on children's Maltese literature started in 1979 by a group of post-graduate students in the Faculty of Education, University of Malta. This volume, which is the first volume of this project, deals with a general view of children's prose literature in Europe as an introduction, followed by a historical aspect of Maltese literature with special reference to children's prose literature in general. My primary aim is to show. how prose literature was adapted and introduced in Maltese Government schools by means of textbooks in the 19th and 20th century. The various Maltese textbooks have all been mentioned and studied. Text-books which in my opinion show changes or signs of developmer1t in the teaching of prose reading in Maltese, have been studied in detail and evaluated. This study includes the textbooks used at the beginning of the 19th century up to those used in our own times . Therefore, the second chapter deals mainly with critical and analytical study of these textbooks. It also includes an Appendix where one can of extracts taken from the books mentioned, as well as photographs of titles of such books.
