The aim of this research is to study the development of installation art in Malta and the works produced by Maltese contemporary installation artists. Over the past few years, a number of articles and essays have dealt with this topic, yet most of these sources discuss installations in isolation, without forging links between both Maltese and international artists. Authors who have written collective essays on Maltese installation art and artists, such as John Baldacchino and Raphael Vella, have taken more of a thematic approach towards the subject. A coherent analysis focusing solely on the art of installation has, until now, not been studied. The main intention is to study the context in which installation found its place locally and how Maltese artists have developed this medium. It also aims to relate Maltese installation art to the contemporary art context. This study works towards an understanding of installation art, together with its historical and critical framework. Such a structure has been formulated by means of close study of various international texts on installation art, as well as those covering the whole context of contemporary art. A number of theoretical writings have been consulted so as to discover the conceptual grounds of this art form. Publications by Maltese scholars and artists were studied concurrently with those of foreign authors so as to create an understanding of both factions. An attempt has been made to synthesise these writings throughout the essay.en_GB
