Abstract: This dissertation sought to assess and evaluate current practices and programmes adopted by the Learning Support Service (Remedial section of the Department of Education). Issues discussed related to the identification and the attitude towards children with learning difficulties, the nature of the provision and aspects of it, the availability of resources, as well as ways and means how the present provision could be developed and extended. Interviews were conducted in ten government primary schools, with their respective Heads of School, year three class teachers as well as a sample of parents who had their children receiving the service in Year Three. A questionnaire was administered to all support teachers. Results indicated a generally positive predisposition towards these children, with members of staff doing their utmost to attend to these children as much as possible and within the limitations imposed by the education system, the school structure and other factors. The Learning Support Service is much appreciated although it was generally understood that it still needs to be developed and refined. An important aspect on which the success of such a service depends was identified to be the collaborative aspect. In deed given a sound and significant collaboration between members and non-members (e.g. parents) of school staff an effective programme of learning support could be developed.
