Abstract: | The majority of literature teaching critics worldwide are convinced that since literature is an experience, the literature teacher's role is to encourage active student participatior ... , in order to make literacy texts the students' own experience. Whether literature can and should be examined, and the best method of examination (if decided in favour of examining it) are still debatable issues. Since the Maltese syllabus at SEC level puts literature in the second paper, two different levels (paper A and paper B) are set. This work consists mainly of a thorough analysis of a random sample of SEC exams scripts, taken from the May 1999 and May 2000 sessions, which indicate clearly the difference with regards to the candidates' abilities and preparation between the two levels. Furthermore prospective candidates' and their teachers' attitudes towards literature, its teaching and examination at SEC level were recorded through a questionnaire and informal interviews respectively. This seemed to be crucial in giving a clear idea of the present teaching methodologies and school preparation for the literature SEC exams at the two levels. |
