Abstract: | This study presents a general overview of the phenomenon of cultural studies. Its main facets have been listed and discussed, highlighting culture's role in the process of English language teaching and language acquisition. Its relevance in a classroom's curriculum, aiming at arming students to overcome the challenges of globalisation in the twenty first century, are also presented. Furthermore, the Maltese trend in culture education is placed in perspective with other European countries. In so doing, similarities and comparisons may be easily viewed. The study moves on to take a historical stance by searching, sifting and discovering the footsteps and milestones which have led to the introduction of the English language, which is presently officially at par with the national language. The results of questionnaires administered to students and teachers across the Maltese Islands and, the outcome of interviews held with educational officers follow. The research aimed at revealing the cultural conscience (or lack of it) which prevails in the English language classroom and, what is being considered a bridge or a barrier at the planning stages. |
