This dissertation starts with a brief outline of Virginia Woolf's ideology on literature and society as reflected in her writings. Critics' views on Woolf and her works are also sketched. The study then gives a general historical overview of the role of social figures in English literature as seen by both male and female writers. This is followed by an analysis of the role of women as social figures portrayed in novels by nineteenth and twentieth century female authors. The next section discusses Virginia Woolf's concept of a social figure - the ideas, attitudes, artistic formulations which characterize her genius and work. The work also explores in depth the role of women as social figures featuring in Woolf's novels and -essays - particular. attention is given to MRS DALLOWAY, A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN and COLLECTED ESSAYS. The conclusion comprises a survey of various critics' negative and positive responses to Virginia Woolf: her literary concept of women and their role in society as represented in her writings.en_GB
