Abstract: Deciding to embark on the adoption journey is a very bold decision. It is a noble deed which gives a child a second chance at acquiring a functional family, a healthy upbringing and ultimately a prospective future. The aim of this study is to understand the journey of adoptive parents both in the short term with regard to the challenging progression into adoptive parenthood, and in the long run in terms of a successful outcome. For this study, data was collected from five couples and one single parent who went through adoption. Semi-structured interviews were implemented and data was evaluated using Thematic Analysis. The results highlight how disheartening the journey can be, chartering constant uncertainties starting from the screening process, moving on to the hefty paperwork and finally returning to Malta with the adoptee. While their mind races with eventualities, parents remain hopeful that everything will eventually fall into place as they seek counsel from others. Participants thus highlighted the importance of support, encouragement and empathy during their journey. Finally, participants are hopeful that their concerns and struggles are listened to so that necessary amendments are carried out to facilitate the journey of prospective adoptive parents in the near future, which in turn may promote adoption. Various proposals for research and adoption agency practices are put forward at the end of this dissertation.
