dc.description.abstractThe distance from the other Member States within the European Union together with the fact that the country is an archipelago, result in Malta having some characteristics which the European Union has recognized (in the Treaty of Amsterdam) as being those of ultraperipheral Islands. The major difference between the ultra-peripheral territories and Malta is the fact that Malta is itself a Member State with no hinterland and that Malta is acknowledged by the EU as a peripheral region.en_GB
