Abstract: | The main rationale underpinning the introduction of the SEC Physical Education option was the improvement of the facilities, and status of the subject. (Borg, 2002) This subject has now been practised and offered as an examinable option for the last eight years. Research within the various areas has been carried out targeting improvement and gathering insights into ideas for a better and more appropriate implementation. Swimming (SEC area 4) is an area which seems to be facing logistical, managerial, and pedagogical difficulties. This research aims at investigating the perceptions of teachers towards teaching SEC Physical Education Swimming. The study has gathered data regarding the benefits, advantages, disadvantages, difficulties, and proposals for improvement from teachers involved in delivering this area. A qualitative approach is taken and data is collected from interviews conducted with eighteen Maltese and Gozitan teachers teaching SEC P.E. option within local state secondary schools. The collected data is analysed and the main findings are discussed. Results not only reinforce the physical benefits in that swimming is a lifelong activity, a healthy exercise, an enjoyable means of exercise, aids children with health and learning difficulties, and accelerates the rehabilitation process of the body but also highlight the financial, logistical, and managerial issues faced in the implementation of this area. Data also shows that the introduction of the SEC P.E. option as an examinable subject conferred greater status and prestige to Physical Education although it is recommended that a revision of the syllabus may be due. |
