Abstract: This dissertation investigates the development and application of computer software for selected topics in biology at undergraduate level. The design and development of two such software packages is described. A list of commercial software packages is examined. and two of them, along with the custom-made software are assessed and evaluated from data gathered through a questionnaire completed by a group of Undergraduates. Reply-frequency tables are set up and tested statistically for significance using chi square whenever possible. The students feel that their understanding can be enhanced with the inclusion of such learning aids into the biology course at the University. and are generally in favour of their implementation. The presentation and ease of use of the software are generally satisfactory but other aspects like the manuals, need improvement. Suggestions are made. Brief manuals and HELP facilities, level of interaction, graphics and user-friendliness are identified as the most desirable software features. The software can be used during practical sessions, lectures, tutorial or by students in their own time. The advantages and disadvantages of these uses are identified.
