Abstract: Photographs are mirrors of the past. Whether they were created to record social life or historical events, or to serve as a medium for artistic expression, or to be used as illustrations in publications, photographs contain documentary value which makes owners, historians, researchers, curators, librarians, archivists and above all conservators believe in the importance of their care and preservation. In order for photographs to be professionally cared for, preserved and above all efficiently used, they need to form part of a private or public archive. This study is addressed towards Heritage Malta's photographic collection; a large national collection which is currently found in a disorganised state. This dissertation aims to act as a reference guide for Heritage Malta to establish its own photographic archive - the Fototeka, and eventually aid in the professional management and general upkeep of each photographic material. Divided into five chapters, this study will give an overview of Heritage Malta's photographic materials, create a detailed management plan for the Fototeka and discuss future prospects for the newly established Fototeka.
