The evolution of the architectural practice in Malta

Abstract

The property development market changes in relation to the economic conditions, as well as the associated professions and practices. The Maltese traditional profession of the Perit follows this trend and the recent changes, at an educational level, reflect its evolving nature. As a result, this study researched the manner in which the international and Maltese profession is responding to changing demands, with particular consideration to the practice of architecture. Periti (supply) and clients (demand) were interviewed in order to achieve a better understanding of the parameters governing aspects related to the profession in Malta. Conclusions obtained from the sample of interviewed participants are indicative but not considered as being representative. The results highlight the importance of differentiating between practices associated with the Perit, namely architecture and civil/structural engineering. Patterns demonstrated that the industry is moving towards higher building standards but the obtained results suggest that there is a demand for different/innovative architectural solutions. In addition, resultant patterns indicate that the profession of the Perit is moving towards specialisation, with particular considerations to niche markets, in association with architectural design. Research has also indicated that a possible slowdown in the Maltese economy might lead to large firms being judged by their ability to focus on multiple niche markets. On the other hand, the survival of smaller firms will depend on their ability to adapt and cater for smaller niches.
