Abstract: This dissertation deals with venture capital opportunities for Maltese SMEs. The first chapter defines the concept of venture capital as a form of private equity capital typically provided by professional institutionally backed investors to new or growing businesses. The first chapter goes on to define the various concepts of alternative sources. of finance to bank loans, such as 'business angels.' The second chapter looks at the principal literature sources relating to the subject area - venture capital. It further analyses published and unpublished sources on the subject with regards to demand and supply of venture capital and the process that SMEs must adopt to obtain such funding.
