Abstract

The standardisation of the Maltese Language has been recognised as an essential exercise and the collation of specialised glossaries in the Maltese Language which are researched, classified and made readily available, will help in no small way to establish this standardisation. These researched glossaries will provide distinct definitions and clear direction so that original works can be written in Maltese which are consistent in meaning and true to grammatical forms. Furthermore translations into Maltese which express the true meaning of the original text, can be made - translations which are unambiguous, consistent, clear and coherent. The main aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive corpus of terminology of art terms in respect of painting be they translated into Maltese, assimilated into Maltese or carried into the Maltese language in their original form. The glossary is as complete as possible, covering and including all the art forms, art movements and schools of thought which have had a significant influence on art trends throughout the last five hundred years. This glossary aims at making a contribution towards the standardisation of the Maltese language, towards the compilation of specialised glossaries and is also intended to contribute towards the writing of original critical works of art in Maltese. Its aim is also to make a contribution so that in as far as possible, the Maltese language continues to grow and its use to spread so that it will be able to stand alongside other European languages.
