The Gozo Citadel area : it's attraction for tourists

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the main factors which motivate and entice tourists to visit the Citadel area of Victoria, Gozo, and its attractions. An analysis of several materials connected to tourism on the island of Gozo has been carried out. The methodology used in this research has been described. Moreover, 100 visitors were surveyed, while four personnel from the museums found at the Citadel and four guides were interviewed in order to provide a holistic view of the typical tourist that generally opts to visit the Citadel area. The investigation has distinguished two main categories of tourist who visit this area, classified as arts-core and arts-peripheral. The research outcomes presented in this dissertation have also identified a change in cultural tourism. The Malta Tourism Authority, Gozo Tourism Association, the Gozo Ministry and the Victoria Local Council are aware of this shift. A project which has been planned by the Gozo Ministry and the Victoria Local Council, is specifically designed for tourists visiting the Citadel area to have a unique and memorable experience. Such projects help to sustain tourism in Gozo especially in the Citadel area and this will strengthen the historical and cultural niche market. This research has led to a series of recommendations and suggestions supporting the development of a stronger tourism trade and opportunities through government projects. Moreover, improvements in tourism marketing, broader studies into motivational factors, and in innovative interpretation, were proposed.
