Abstract: This work deals with the origins and development of the teaching of English to foreigners locally. Chapter One deals with the spread of the English language and moves on to analyse the importance and use of this language. Chapters Two and Three deal with the history of the schools, their present and future trends. Chapter Fours gives a detailed description of the various General and Specialised English courses offered by the schools. The different types of methods employed in teaching, difficulties encountered by both teachers and students, together with suggestions on the use of various teaching techniques, are considered in Chapter Five. Chapter Six gives information about the teachers, with regards to employment, qualifications, inductions and in-services courses. The economics of T.E.F.L. are dealt in Chapter Seven. In conclusion, Chapter Eight deals with the early difficulties encountered by the organizers of the courses, the schools' shortcomings and the setting up of F.E.L.T.O.M.
